Arcade EmulationThere are a number of routes to the original arcade experience using modern hardware, including PCs and modern consoles. This section describes the basics, and some sources for further information. M.A.M.E.![]() MAME stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. The first public MAME release was on February 5, 1997, by Nicola Salmoria. The purpose behind MAME is to preserve the original gameplay of arcade circuit boards that would otherwise be lost for ever. It works by using the original software from the ROM (Read Only Memory) chips on the PCB, and interpreting the software to display on a PC or MAC. So rather than being a copy of the original, it IS the original game, including the need to insert virtual coins, and also including original software bugs! MAME supports 3400 unique games and is growing all the time. Click here for more details and to download MAME DAPHNE
