The GamesSee below for my favourite games! These will be first in line for playing when I get my cabinet completed... PhoenixFor some people it was Space Invaders, but I never really got into that as a kid. My first proper addiction developed on a holiday to Majorca in 1981, the game, Phoenix. Basically a 5 level space invader style shooter, but with a twist. The first 2 levels, fairly standard galaxian style invaders. Next 2 levels, eggs which morph into birds and swoop down the screen, as you shoot off their wings! Final level, the mother ship, which was a larhe saucer with an Octopus alien in the middle, which you had to break through the outside of the saucer to hit!
Track and FieldThis seems pretty basic now, but when it was released there was nothing like it, and every arcade had a crowd of kids around it. The main feature of this game, which was based on various athletic events, was the control mechanism. In order to replicate the feeling of "athletism", you controlled the pace of running, jumping etc. by bashing the control buttons as fast as possible. This resulted in some very sore fingers. The game was also marked out by the use of sythensised speech, for the announcements prior to the race ("MARKS, SET, BANG!"). |
